The sandwich wooden building in Ostravica, designed by the Ostrava-based StudioArk, stands out for its archetypal design and integration with the surrounding terrain. The structure, characterized by a wooden framework on a concrete foundation, features an untreated larch wood facade and a metal roof. The design incorporates a traditional gable roof archetype with an offset ridge, adding a touch of familiarity. Despite its initial simplicity, the two-story building reveals several refined elements, notably the covered terraces seamlessly connected to the living spaces. The family house adopts an atypical trapezoidal floor plan, visually enhanced by larch batten screens, providing an almost protective shell towards the road and ensuring privacy for the residents. The larch batten cladding not only contributes to the building’s distinctive appearance but also cleverly ensures privacy on the terrace facing the driveway while preserving panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, as explained by StudioArk architects. Inside, wood dominates the interior, with spruce board coverings on walls and ceilings complemented by gray floors and black furnishings. The living room is accentuated by a prominent black kitchen unit and a spiral staircase leading to the attic. StudioArk successfully brings a modern family home to Ostravica, harmonizing with the village’s character and natural surroundings through the effective use of larch battens, providing the structure with a cohesive and compact form.
