The Szentpéterfa Elementary School in Hungary introduces a ground-breaking school architecture model. Through extensive participatory design and years of multidisciplinary research, the school features diverse learning and social spaces, blending indoor and outdoor environments. Noteworthy additions include Alcoved Classrooms, an evolution of the L-shaped classroom, and the world’s first Turning Classrooms. Situated in Szentpéterfa, a historic Croatian minority settlement on the Hungarian-Austrian border, the community maintains a strong identity by merging contemporary innovations with cherished traditions. Amidst political changes, the community sought a new school building, leading to a collaboration with CAN Architects, chosen for their research-based and participatory design approach to transform Hungarian school architecture.
